Scanning plans - How we scan your plans
Professional support for your order
When scanning plans, we attach great importance to brightness and contrast during the scanning process. The contrast of the plan content (foreground information) against the background (sometimes yellowed, gray or with dirt) is optimally set and checked by us during each scanning process and adjusted accordingly. Torn plans are improved before scanning so that the plans remain intact during scanning. The scanning process is monitored by our professional. Once the plans have been scanned, they are aligned horizontally. This means that you can read the plan horizontally. The plan is also aligned on the X-axis so that it is displayed straight. A check is then carried out again to ensure that fine lines and darker areas are clearly legible. For difficult black and white building plans, we scan the plans in grayscale so that the differentiation is more differentiated and thus leads to a better result.
Scanning plans, digitizing plans or vectorizing plans?
Scanning: Scanning refers to the process of converting physical documents, images or graphics into digital files. A scanner is used to scan the physical image or document and convert it into a digital image consisting of individual pixels. This process is often used to transfer paper documents or printed images into digital formats.
Digitization: Digitization goes beyond mere scanning. It refers to the broader process of converting analog information, be it text, images or other forms of data, into digital formats. Information is captured in a structured way, organized and often stored in databases or systems. This enables the efficient management, search and use of information in digital form.
Vectorization: Vectorization is a special process in which digital images or graphics that normally consist of pixels (raster graphics) are converted into vector formats. Vector graphics consist of mathematical formulas that describe lines, curves and shapes. They are scalable, lossless and are particularly suitable for logos, technical drawings and graphics where precision and flexibility are important.
In summary, scanning is the basic process of converting analogue to digital images, while digitizing describes a more comprehensive conversion of analogue information into digital data. Vectorizing refers to the conversion of raster graphics into scalable vector graphics.

Scanning plans in detail - How are paper plans digitized?
Scanning plans - how a scanner works
Scanners are essential for converting paper plans into digital form (scanning plans). They use light-sensitive sensors to capture the finest details of physical documents. By moving over the documents, a digital copy is created that links traditional paper with the digital world (plan digitization or plan archiving). Pixels are the smallest units of a digital image and contain color values for image composition. Pixels, in turn, are the equivalents on scanned documents. Together they form a coherent visual representation of the original plan.
Our company relies on scanners from Contex and software from Contex.
What happens when plans are scanned?
Different image formats are used when scanning construction plans: PDF, TIFF and JPG. PDF is very popular due to its cross-platform compatibility. TIFF ensures image quality through lossless compression, while JPG offers efficient compression for the web or email. DPI (Dots Per Inch) measures the scan resolution, influenced by the number of pixels per inch. Higher DPI values increase the level of detail in scanned images. An optimal scan resolution for most paper plans is between 300 and 400 DPI. This range balances clarity with manageable file sizes. When scanning your plans, you can also freely select the format and scan resolution.
Paper to CAD - Paper to CAD
The process of converting scanned paper plans into computer-aided design (CAD) files is known as "paper to CAD". This process converts the visual information into editable and scalable digital designs, which increases accessibility and improves ease of editing. The original is no longer required and can be archived again or even destroyed. The newly created plan scan is comparable to a photo with x thousand pixels and therefore usually cannot yet be processed in CAD, as practically all CAD works vectorially.
