Pioneering work: The early days of CAD and the Swiss role in its development

The beginnings of computer-aided design (CAD) date back to the 1950s, when General Motors developed the first CAD systems in its research laboratories. In the 1950s, IBM introduced the pioneering IBM-740/780 CAD system, which was the first to display lines on a CRT screen. The public breakthrough came in 1959 with the DAC-1, the first publicly known CAD system. In Switzerland, the first CAD systems came onto the market in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Autodesk, the company behind the world-famous AutoCAD, was founded in California in 1982 and opened its first European branch in Switzerland in the same year.

Before and after: digitizing architectural plans for renovations and conversions

Before the era of computer-aided design (CAD), all plans were hand-drawn, often on transparent or paper formats. This time-consuming practice lasted well into the 80s and 90s. Many of these plans were never used and remain in archives or basements to this day. With property renovations due at some point, the need to update the plans becomes clear. Nowadays, no architect draws by hand anymore, but we can digitize hand-drawn plans. We create floor plans, sections, facades as well as situation and detail plans. The result is a complete CAD plan that you can import directly into your CAD system to serve as the basis for an upcoming renovation or conversion.

Precise scanning of the architectural plans

Scanning architectural plans creates an exact image of your plan (scan) in a file on the computer. Each point is photographed using cameras and saved as a pixel (image point). The individual color values of a digital raster graphic are referred to as pixels or pixels. Pixel is an artificial word made up of the abbreviations of the words picture and element and is often abbreviated to px. The scan is then saved in a graphic format. The most common formats are TIF, JPG or PDF. When scanning construction plans, we usually use the TIF format for black and white scans. This is because the file size for black and white plans is much smaller than for color plans. When scanning color architectural plans, we usually use the JPG format, as this has the best ratio of file size and quality for subsequent plan digitization or long-term archiving. However, you can also freely select the format and scan resolution. The scan resolution is usually 400 dpi for black and white plans and 200-300 dpi for color plans. This is the first step on the way from paper to CAD (paper to cad). The original is no longer required and can be archived again or even destroyed. The newly created scan is comparable to a photo with x thousand pixels and therefore cannot yet be processed in CAD, as practically all CAD works vectorially.

Plan optimization: Perfect contrast and brightness for architectural plans

When scanning architectural plans, we attach great importance to brightness and contrast during the scanning process. The contrast of the plan content (foreground information) against the background (sometimes yellowed, gray or with dirt) is optimally adjusted and checked by our professional for each scan. Torn plans are restored before scanning so that the plans remain intact during the scanning process. The scanning process is monitored by our professional. After scanning, the plan is aligned horizontally. This means that you can read the plan horizontally. The plan is also aligned on the X-axis so that it is displayed straight. Our specialists then check the plan again to ensure that fine lines and darker areas are clearly legible. For difficult black-and-white building plans, we scan the plans in grayscale so that the differentiation is more differentiated and thus leads to a better result. Digitalgut makes it easy to digitize your architectural plans.

From scan to vector: Perfect plan digitization of architectural plans

The scan (PDF, JPG, TIF) is manually converted into vectors by our specialists (plan digitizing). Our basic software for this is AutoCAD or ArchiCAD. The individual pixels are converted into vectors. Dimensioned plans are digitized based on the dimensions and are therefore often more accurate than the original. The individual elements are professionally digitized into different layers. You can also specify your desired layer structure or provide us with a drawing file. We call the result a plan digitalization. Color accents are retained or improved, unwanted shading or unnecessary details disappear. If necessary, you can easily rework the digital plan (digitize architectural plans, the vectorized drawing) with your CAD. Digitizing architectural plans has been our core business for more than 30 years. Due to the improved quality of your digitized plans after the process, you can quickly and accurately create presentations for your real estate clients, construction partners or for your own architectural firm. You may not want to digitize / vectorize plans for an entire house, but only for parts of the building such as living spaces, a business wing or currently unused and unknown rooms. We can also do this for you, for example by digitizing or redrawing only the plan for the kitchen, a furnished room or a single floor of your property.

2D or 3D plan digitization for flexible further processing

We digitize architectural plans in AutoCAD in two dimensions and create a DWG or DXF for you. With ArchiCAD, it is also possible to digitize the plans in three dimensions. Once your drawings have been digitized, you can project views in 3D and make additions or changes as required. In other words, as realistically as possible, as potential tenants, buyers or construction partners can most easily imagine. This also opens up a wide range of CAD-based options for detailed project work, whether for renovations or large-scale extensions and conversions. Instead of laboriously explaining the floor plans or paper plans, you can present each property area in digital form according to the customer's wishes quickly and in a way that is understandable even for non-experts. Thorough understanding is an important plus for you as a real estate agent in every sales meeting. As an architect, you can discuss planned additions or property renovations much more easily with building partners and clients. Quicker decisions mean less effort for you. Our CAD service gives you the planning basis you need. With digitalgut, you can digitize your architectural plans with ease.

The file formats are the basis

TIFF - Tagged Image File Format

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format), often referred to as TIF for short, is an important format in the field of data exchange in prepress. This file format plays a decisive role in the transmission of high-quality image data, particularly in the printing industry. The advantage of TIFF is that it can store images with a high color depth, which is particularly important for the detailed representation of graphics and images. Another notable application of TIFF is on the Internet, where it is used to provide high-resolution images in lossless quality. Although TIFF files require more storage space than the lossy JPEG format due to their uncompressed nature, this is gladly accepted in order to maintain image quality at the highest level. The use of TIFF has established itself as the industry standard for high-quality image files and is often used where the highest precision and image quality are required, such as in prepress and other professional graphic applications.

JPEG - File Interchange Format

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widespread file format that is mainly used in photography and on the Internet for compressing image data. In contrast to TIFF, JPEG saves images in compressed form, which leads to a reduction in file size. This is particularly advantageous for use on the Internet, where efficient storage utilization is crucial. However, this compression is also accompanied by a certain loss of information, which is accepted in the file size in favour of storage space optimization. JPEG has established itself as the standard for lower file size images and is ideal for use in online platforms, social media and other contexts where a balance between file size and image quality is required. It is important to note that due to compression, JPEG images do not offer the same color depth and detail as TIFF images, which should be considered for applications that require the highest image quality.

PDF - Portable Document Format

PDF (Portable Document Format) is a versatile file format that is widely used for displaying and exchanging documents. In contrast to pure image formats such as TIFF or JPEG, PDF is designed to store more than just images. It enables the integration of text, graphics and images in a compact format. PDF offers the advantage that it displays documents uniformly across platforms and regardless of the software used. This makes it a preferred format for digital documents, e-books, forms and much more. In addition, PDF supports various compression techniques to optimize file size without compromising the quality of the content it contains. The format is particularly useful for exchanging print-ready documents as it preserves the integrity of layouts and formatting. Due to its flexibility and wide range of applications, PDF has become a widely used standard for electronic document transmission and archiving.
